/BN, Duppé/ The results of the first phase of the German Excellence Strategy were eagerly awaited on September 27th. The successful cluster proposals were announced that afternoon during the Bernstein Conference in Berlin. The success of six clusters with the participation of computational neuroscience was met with great applause and congratulations from the international scientists attending the conference.
88 full proposals were submitted, 57 of which were selected for funding by the Excellence Commission. Scientists of the Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience are involved in six clusters – often as initiators naturally om affiliation to their respective institutions. The clusters of excellence form the basis for the application procedure for the universities of excellence, which will be selected in summer 2019.
The selected clusters are characterized by the consistently high participation of non-university partners and multidisciplinarity, which is common practice in the Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience since its initiation.
The funding for the new excellence clusters begins on January 1st, 2019. Clusters are funded for seven years, with a second funding period of seven years following a successful re-application. According to the administrative agreement, a total of around 385 million euros in funding are set aside each year, 75 percent of which will be provided by the federal government and 25 percent by the respective federal state.(translation of the extract of the press release of the German Research Foundation)
