Bernstein Node Rhine-Main Region

The Rhine-Main region is a vibrant place for computer-based and systems neuroscience research. The cities of Frankfurt and Mainz are home to about 150 neuroscience laboratories, which make up a large part of the Rhine-Main Neuroscience Network (RMN^2; https://www.rmn2.de/).

The researchers at the Bernstein Node of the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) represent institutions such as the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and the Goethe University Frankfurt (GU) with their university hospitals, the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS). Furthermore, the following non-university research institutions are represented: the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research and the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) in Mainz, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research (MPI BR) and the Ernst Strüngemann Institute for Neuroscience (ESI) in Frankfurt a.M.

Neuroscience research in Mainz and Frankfurt a.M. ranges from molecular and cellular neuroscience to systems circuit neuroscience. Experimental and theoretical neuroscientists work together on joint projects. They comprise topics in computational neuroscience, systemic network neuroscience, cognitive science, and AI.
