Bernstein member involved: Viola Priesemann

Viola Priesemann, who has been a member of Die Junge Akademiesince 2021 and is a member of the current Board, is being honoured with the prize for her scientific achievements in the field of physics, her leadership qualities and her strong commitment to European cooperation in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Her work reflects the very values embodied in the Prize – of promoting science as a global public good, facilitating scientific collaboration across borders and disciplines, and strengthening the impact of science in society,” said Paweł Rowiński, President of ALLEA and chair of the Madame de Staël Prize Jury.

About the award winner
Viola Priesemann is professor of Physics at Georg-August University and group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organisation in Göttingen. Her research focuses on living and artificial neural networks, working out the fundamental mechanisms of selforganisation, learning and efficient coding. At Die Junge Akademie, Viola Priesemann is committed to the topic of science communication, among other things, and in this context was largely responsible for the publication of a guide on science communication in autumn 2024.

About the prize
ALLEA’s annual Madame de Staël Prize honours outstanding researchers and scientists from across Europe whose work makes a significant contribution to European cultural and intellectual values and to the ideas of European integration. The prize was established in 2014. Nominations are open to ALLEA member academies, of which Die Junge Akademie has been a member since June 2020.

About ALLEA
ALLEA is the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities and represents nearly 60 academies from about 40 EU and non-EU countries. Since its foundation in 1994, ALLEA speaks out on behalf of its members on the European and international stages, promotes science as a global public good, and facilitates scientific collaboration across borders and disciplines.
